LASIK/Refractive Surgery
Laser vision correction uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea in order to reduce astigmatism, nearsightedness or far- sightedness. While there are many different ways to do this there are basically two approaches, one is surface ablation, for example PRK (photorefractive keratotomy). The other is stromal ablation that requires making a flap in the cornea with a microkeratome or special laser. An example of this is LASIK. Both procedures are highly accurate and have a very high success rate. Although, as with any procedure, complications can occur. Usually these are minor and completely treatable but rarely can lead to significant loss of vision. Some ophthalmologists consider PRK to be safer because there is no creation of a flap thereby eliminating concern of flap complications. The drawback is that the healing takes several days and there is slightly more discomfort than with Lasik. The healing in Lasik and return to good vision is quicker and there is less discomfort. That is why Lasik is so popular. However, there is a trend now towards utilizing surface ablation to reduce one significant source of complications. Dr. Hirshfield will closely examine your eyes to determine which, if any, procedure is appropriate for you.
